I am a resident of Alabama. I was driving through Missouri. I got a traffic ticket just outside of St. Louis. The officer said I was going 70 in a 50. But, I was going with the speed of the other drivers, I think it was just b/c I had out of state tags.

ANYHOW, the cop was in such a hurry, he didn't even allow me to explain, etc., he just wrote up the ticket, and sent me on my way. He rushed through the whole thing, as if he just wanted to get back on the road and pull over more out-of-state motorists. He didn't even get my name right. My driver's license has my first, middle, and last names, in that order (I don't know if all states are like that), i.e.: John David Smith. On the ticket, he wrote in my middle name as my last name, then my first name. So, instead of "Smith, John", he wrote "David, John" on the ticket.

Since then, I completely forgot about it, until the other day when I received a letter from the good old municipality of ______, Missouri. SO... it said that my license will be suspended/revoked, if I don't pay the fine. Can they fine me, or suspend my license, when the officer couldn't even read/write my name correctly?!

Moreover, if the fine doesn't get paid (I'm not too inclined to pay a state that employs someone who targets motorists b/c they're out of state), and they put out a warrant for my arrest, can they arrest me? They're looking for "John David", and my name is "John Smith".

You are not going to just skate away from this one. There are sometimes cases where a clerical error would be enough to dismiss the ticket, but what you have is not enough. Besides, you would have had to gone to court to try to fight that anyway. You need to pay the fine or else, yes you can have a warrant issued and you license could get suspended.

I know you are very upset about the whole thing, but first of all you don't know for sure that he pulled you over just because you had out of state plates. And even if he did, every single state has at least some officers that pull this kind of crap.

At this point you need to just pay the fine and be done with it, otherwise things are liable to get ugly for you down the road.
