Washing company vehicle

My company provides a truck for me to work from. In a meeting this morning they said since the weather is getting nicer that we need to start washing the trucks. However they told use that it will need to be done off the clock and eluded to at home. I am a non exempt employee and they said that this is a trade off for letting us drive the trucks home. Is this legal?

Seems reasonable to me. Or would you prefer the expense and wear/tear on your own vehicle driving to and fro?

Even assuming they cannot require you to do work off hours... it would seem that allowing an employee to drive a truck home is a rather beneficial exchange for you. I wouldn't even think about what is legal or not. I'd be thinking about whether the benefits you have in exchange for the request is a good one. After all, they could just as easily say "deal's off" and you're left without the benefit of this offer.
