okay so I'm 16 and shoplifted from a store and got caught when walking out. I don't really know how they knew but anyways, I only took little things (makeup, mini body spray bottles, etc..) i was taken to a back room where i gave the cop the stolen items and he took my license and i filled a form out with my name and address. then he took that to another room while i waited for an hour. he told me that he would let me off with a warning but if i'm caught stealing from that store again then i would go to jail. what comes now?

-did it go on my record?
-will i get any sort of mail / phone call confirming anything?

It appears, from your post, the store chose not to press charges. This means no record outside of store or any Retail Theft Database they might subcribe to. I do expect you will get a letter of Civil Demand. The amount will depend on your state and value of what you stole

thank you for your reply. I am not quite sure of the value but it probably wasn't more than 25 dollars worth. very minor. what do you mean by "a letter of civil demand"?

Its a "Civil" fine. It has nothing to do with any criminal charges that might or might not be filed. State law allows retailers (who lose billions to shoplfiters) to seek recovery through these Civil actions. On a $25.00 theft I suspect your Civil Demand (or your parents if a minor) to be in neighborhood of $200.00 to $300.00. Failure to pay will likely result in fines tripiling. Continued failure to pay can result in negative in credit (or parents) rating and/or Law suit. This can also provoke the store to go ahead and file criminal actions if they have not yet done so

is it guaranteed that i will be sent one or just a chance? the cop told me that he would let me off with a warning. it seemed harmless, like there would be no charges because he said that i looked like i had learned my lesson (i was kind of shooken up) and just not to ever steal anything from the store again or i would go to jail.

They will most likely send a letter because they did not press charges. They use the money you pay them to cover the expenses it costs them to catch you. So it is very very likely they will send the letter.

Just don't steal anything again or you can face criminal charges.
