Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft What do I do?

I was recently stopped for shop lifting. The total was under $500 from all times. I'm thoroughly embarrassed and ashamed. I know it was wrong and I'm truly sorry. I've never been in trouble before. Because I've never been arrested or in trouble before, I don't know what to expect or what to do. Do I get a lawyer? I'm sure there will be fines. Is there any way this can not go on my record? It was an inexcusable indiscretion that will never happen again.

Any help is appreciated.

If you've actually been charged: Get an attorney.

If you haven't, but have just been issued a civil demand: Pay the demand and hope that they don't file charges as well.

I wasn't given any paperwork other than a ban from the store. I was on tape one other time. I guess I can call the public defenders office and see what it would take to get representation. I can't afford a private attorney on my own.

That's a good idea. I'll wait for my paperwork to come. See what I have to work with and then I'll call around. Thanks for your help.
