Shoplifting, Larceny, Robbery, Theft What is need to arrest / win case?

Hello,

An individual stole over $85,000 forth of equipment from me. He has been located (tip from someone), the police know about the situation but have missed 3 potential times to catch him with the equipment.

I have photos of him and others using the equipment (that they posted online), unfortunately there is no visible serial numbers in the photos.

Right now I am waiting for the detective/police to located the equipment, or learn where he'll be with it again so he can be arrested and the equipment returned.

In case something happens and he learns that we're on to him, what evidence do I need in order to sue him in court if the police can't do anything?

Is there anything else I can do, or am I stuck waiting?

You are pretty much stuck waiting. You can hire a private detective if you really want to do something.

Is this "equipment" he has to visit? If it is not with him, how is it that he is in its presence sometimes, but not others?

If it is stored somewhere else, and he couples with the stuff to use it, he may be able to make a an argument that HE did not steal it but that someone else did and said he could use it. So, don't be too excited ... just being joined with the stuff does not mean that he can necessarily be charged with the theft.
