Former President Barack Obama (left) and Speaker Emerita of the House Nancy Pelosi (right) had 'privately agreed to abstain from making any endorsements,' as it became clear 81-year-old President Joe Biden was going to abandon his reelection bid in July 2024

Former President
Barack Obama was not pleased that former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris the day after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race.

In his new book Retribution, ABC News' Jonathan Karl provided new details on what had been widely known - that Obama didn't want a quick coronation of Harris, but rather 'a process' to determine who would become the Democratic nominee.

The Daily Mail obtained an advanced copy.

Obama called Pelosi shortly after her endorsement of Harris became public.

'The Obamas were not happy,' a Pelosi confidant told Karl. 'This person summed up Obama's message to Pelosi as, essentially, "What the f*** did you just do?"'

Pelosi told the former Democratic president: 'That train has left the station.'

The endorsement had come as a surprise to Obama because he and Pelosi had been in 'regular communication' as it appeared then 81-year-old Biden was nearing the decision to drop out of the race, and 'they agreed Harris should not simply be handed the nomination unchallenged,' Karl wrote.

'Therefore, Obama and Pelosi - arguably the two most influential figures in the Democratic Party - had privately agreed to abstain from making any endorsement.

Nancy Pelosi is one of the most shrewd politicians in Washington. She rivals or exceeds some other famous Speakers like Tip O'Neil. She is no stranger to playing hardball when its required. Given her public persona she would fit well with Teddy Roosevelt's famous statement "Speak softly and carry a big stick." After dealing with her in Washington for eight years Obama surely knows this. In his position I would've been keeping a close eye on Nancy and keep checking to see what she was up to. If you don't that, she'll run you over like freight train if she sees an advantage to it. If Obama failed to watch her closely then this is largely on him. He should have known that this might be a possibility. On the other hand, Obama's idea to test Harris before crowning her the Democratic nominee was likely the best way to go. Obama may not play hardball as strong as Pelosi but I think he has finger on the pulse of electorate, at least more than Pelosi does.

Pelosi did a good job of silencing the dissenting voices of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) and the other young Democratic women House Members that had become known as "the Squad". She is the reason so few Democrats publicly dissent from whatever becomes the Democrat's established policy. That's great for pushing through lots of legislation, but not great for getting the best legislation.

Poor Obama, betrayed by a politician.

Anybody surprised?

I'll send him a TS card.

(Remember those, Judge?) LOL.

'deed I does!

Ahhh, I love these trips down memory lane.

There are several variations of the "TS" card seen around from years past. I've seen these spelled out as "Tuff Stuff" or "Tuff S**t" but both were a humorous way to discourage whining. Likely begun as a joke to give to Service Members who seemed to complain all the time, similar to the phrase, "tell it to the chaplain" instead of listening to the gripe. Most have a number of boxes that can be checked off or hole-punched, to indicate the number of visits to the chaplain (I'm not sure if the chaplain would no longer see that Service Member whose card got full!).

It seems that some chaplains picked up on these and used similar cards, perhaps the ones with "Tuff Stuff" instead of the alternative, then later "Theological Solutions," to encourage Service Members to come and see them and also to advertise worship services. Below is a card used by chaplains at Spokane Army Air Field (sometime between the end of WW2 and 1950) which has similar encouragement to visit the chaplain on one side (with places for hole-punches) and worship service times on the other side for Catholics, Protestants and Jewish Service Members (author's collection):

Below is another similar TS card, this using the TS to recommend "Tried Solutions for Tough Situations" with several situations paired with Scripture verses. This card also has the blocks around the outside to be hole-punched by the chaplain. On the reverse is a picture of the chaplain, Melvin E. Pratt (author's collection):

Below is a simpler "TS" card adding the common statement, "Tell your troubles to the Chaplain" by Chaplain Sidoti, who had a distinguished military career in WW2 and following in the NY National Guard. You can read more about Chaplain Sidoti here (author's collection):
