Trump to cut taxes on Social Security

Why not stop all retirement benefits to all federal employees with previous 30 plus years of service.

I gave 35 years of life in my service in our Army.

I only comment on my behalf.

No one entity, person, or thing can take my pension.

I earned it, mate.

I spent 5 years in combat across Vietnam and southeast Asia. I was in combat, protecting and serving.

Subsequent to Nam, I was involved in the Grenada incursion, as well as the little tiff we had with Panama in 1989, under the Daddy Bush regime.

The only way my pension and social security payments will cease, is upon my death. However, even my death can't stop my pension or social insecurity payments.

How/why?

If my wonderful hasn't assumed room temperature, too, she'd begin receiving some of my pensions as my spouse.

As to Musk's alleged snooping, based upon Musk's unimpressive, minimal achievements in life, I doubt that he'll be able to accomplish much. He's too easily distracted, besides his insatiable sexual urges to procreate with a willing female tend to result in his tendency to copulate.

You said, cuts might as well go all the way. Why hold back what kind of savings could we gain? Cut the nuke guys as well that should work out good for our enemies. You like your leader have a failed ideology. You make sensible cuts not just massive uneducated slashes which result in damaging the ability of the government to function. You make no sense in your arguments nor the defense of them. You are correct as I am indirectly affected by this and my brother is directly is affected. Firing people is never easy but when you are forced to do that on the whim of the new administration it is even harder.
I never said anything about cuts going all the way. I don't know what you mean. I have worked for many companies over the years, and at some point they all get bloated and need to cut back on the number of employees. IMO, that is poor management that lets that happen in the first place. I don't know the details of the federal government, but I suspect that is true for them also. There are 2.4 million people in the Federal government, not counting another 2.4 million in the military. That doesn't count state and local governments.

I am sorry that you and your family are affected by cutbacks in the number of employees in the Federal government. I have lost my job due to cutbacks in a private company, and have seen many more people lose their jobs in cutbacks that I lucky enough to have survived. That doesn't include 2 other times when I was let go from contract consulting jobs when companies had big layoffs, and I got no severance for those instances.

True, but it is different when it is on the other foot. I appreciate your service and my father served in Da Nang so I do get it. They are wanting to cut stuff and have proven no government payment is secure. They are cutting the VA, and Musk is all those things you said and then some.

Well I see, so we might as well cancel the Air Force and Army as well, might as well reduce the number of JAG officers in half. Lets also take the former federal judges and cut their retirement benefits while we are at it. How much money does that save?

Not to worry, mate.

Our military is under strength already.

However, if we do find ourselves engaged in real combat, against formidable enemies, our military is nearly decapitated because recruitment sucks.

We've destroyed our draft, replacing it with obese, barely literate youngsters, lacking direction and motivation.

If Russia or China were to attack our interests, we'd be hard pressed to repel it. We lack that we once possessed, leaders with a backbone and a brain.

Our military is also deeply understaffed and not motivated.

By the way, no cuts to VA pensions are under consideration and/or discussion. If the Trumpster gets his way, there will be substantial increases to my 100% disability status for my VA pension, which effectively doubles my Army pension.

To paraphrase Kamala, I'm unbothered by rumors and birdbrain individuals who don't know much, other than speculating and guessing.

They are cutting staff at VA, but I have not seen anything that suggests that benefits to veterans is being cut. Normally, any cut to benefits would have to be in legislation approved by Congress and signed by the President:

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs today [February 13, 2025] announced the dismissal of more than 1,000 employees.

Those dismissed today include non-bargaining unit probationary employees who have served less than a year in a competitive service appointment or who have served less than two years in an excepted service appointment.

The personnel moves will save the department more than $98 million per year, and VA will redirect all of those resources back toward health care, benefits and services for VA beneficiaries.

So they cut the staff with the VA and now expect to redirect those resources back towards the VA healthcare. So, explain to me how they are going to send those funds to health care and benefits when they just cut the staff that administer and deliver those services?

The idiocy never stops.

So you are saying that reducing the number of employees to run the federal bureaucracy is going "all the way"? What if those employees are no longer needed. There is a big difference between cutting retirement benefits (which would require Congressional approval to change the law) and cutting the number of bureaucrats needed to administer the retirement programs (which generally speaking the President has the power to do without Congress).

No one seemed to complain when Bill Clinton reduced over 377K federal jobs that were deemed to be not necessary.

I was going to suggest that you move to some other country which guarantees all their citizens government jobs, but I am not sure there are any left. Even in North Korea and Cuba, they don't guarantee you a job. They did that in Russia and China years ago, but they gave that up. Maybe on some other planet.
I think the issue is that these cuts are being done without much thought beyond slashing numbers.

This is the part I was laughing at.

"VA employs nearly 371,000 health care professionals and support staff at VA medical facilities across the country."

They are cutting "more than" 1000 employees. It is a miniscule reduction and it is not idiocy.

Yelp junior, I just got through browsing through the cancelled contracts from DOGE.

Biggest loser so far is the Department of Agriculture so look for food prices to skyrocket even more and crop prices to go up which makes roughly everything you buy to feed yourself increase. Might be time to look for that place on the island I have always wanted and cash out.

Congrats.

Not when they're already short-staffed...

You all do not understand, the cuts they are making almost equal the amount of money the largest billionaires will get in tax breaks.

this is a private equity firm, cut it up and divide it out and watch it fail.

I like other suckers who vote for Trump are about to see some serious crap.

Yup. And bringing the rest of us along for the ride. Thx. :p

I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that our military recruitment is suffering. In fact, since Trump was elected, all branches are on target to meet or exceed the 2025 recruitment goals.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army expects to meet its enlistment goals for 2025, marking a dramatic turnaround for a service that has struggled for several years to bring in enough young people and has undergone a major overhaul of its recruiting programs.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said the Army is on pace to bring in 61,000 young people by the end of the fiscal year in September and will have more than 20,000 additional young people signed up in the delayed entry program for 2026. It's the second straight year of meeting the goals.

"What's really remarkable is the first quarter contracts that we have signed are the highest rate in the last 10 years," Wormuth said. "We are going like gangbusters, which is terrific."

Early Momentum: Army Hits 30,000 Recruits, Half its Goal for the Year

There are many articles in the last several months that say the same thing.

Maybe they intend to use the $98 million to hire people that are needed to directly improve services to VA, instead of paying a bunch of administrative people who are not all needed.

I know people who work at the VA, this is affecting Nurses and Doctors. While I am sure there is some administrative people involved. This is affecting newly hired direct practitioners as well.

Musk the dipstick can go on stage with a chrome chainsaw and act like the master cutter. What an idiot.

I am not sure that Musk was involved in cuts at VA. They issued their own statement on cutting 1000 jobs and saving $98 million to help improve care elsewhere.

How long are you going to remain on the bandwagon? Is it going to take a loaf of bread being 20-30 bucks or maybe even 100 dollars? Trump took a 250 million dollar campaign contribution from Muck and this is what we get. Yes I mean to use Muck because that is what he is doing Mucking up everything. This is an Epic fail, just wait.

DUH, unfortunately this nation has run a deficit for the past six or seven decades.

The United States government has run a deficit since 1970, with the exception of four years between 1998 and 2001. The deficit has grown in recent years, and is projected to continue to grow.

I'm hoping President Trump can find a way to cut expenditures and get our nation to stop throwing away the taxes they wrest from hard working, honest citizens.

A current example would be the billions of dollars we've wasted by funding Ukraine's foolish and fake squabble with Russia. In fact, I believe thousands of people were slaughtered just to assuage Putin's and Zelensky's massive egos. Even the third leg of the milk stool, Chairman Xi, knew enough not to become involved in that vile, evil madness.
