breaking lease in Michigan

My daughter has an apt lease with one other girl. The other girl has let her boyfriend move in rent free. He doesnt work or go to school. She is a college student in Michigan. Hope this will resolve but if not is there anyway she can legally break the lease and move out.

Yes, in most cases if the other girl accepts...........the leasing office will be willing to take her name off. She can't without the other girl accepting since it is in both their names.

the other girl is not willing to let my daughter off the lease. SHe doesnt have enough income to pay all the rent and the boyfriend has no job. will it help to talk to the landlord about the boyfriend living there or will it make them mad. I dont want them evicted. Is there any other way she can get out of her part of the lease?

Honestly, I have seen problems like this very often………..There is not much you can do. In the future it is advisable for her to get a living agreement with future apartment mates signed. You can try talking to the owner, he/she might decide to kick the girl out an allow your daughter substitute with another person. But your daughter will have to pay full rents till then. Some owners will not want to get involed.

Only if ALL parties agree in writing to amend persons on the lease is it done right. The LL has NO obligation to do anything here and in fact if anything if the b/f is unauthorized occupant him being there could cause ALL of them to get evicted.
