Weapons, Guns, Firearms Custom knife: legal without a concealed carry?

Forgive me if this is the wrong subforum or forum to ask this on. Just to clarify: I am in no trouble, but I want to ask this so I don't get into any.

I am 16 years old and wish to construct an electric knife while keeping it within legal limits. The knife will be under 4 inches and have a body the blade can retract into. It is not spring loaded, but the blade will have the ability to be pushed in a linear motion into a deployed and retracted mode (in which the blade locks into the mode it is put into). It will be able to fit in one's pocket and will have a switch to turn the electricity on and off. Is this legal without a concealed carry permit, and am I old enough to be brandishing this weapon legally? If not, what are the requirements for doing so?

Tasers are an issue on their own for a 16-year-old in your state.

You really shouldn't do this. It is a bad idea for SOOOOOOO many reasons.

Technologically, I know what I'm doing. I already have it mapped out with added safety features from input from a few certified electrical engineers. I only need to know if it's legal or not.

Now that you've actually explained what you're doing: The phrase you are looking for in Florida law is "Electric Weapon". Statutes & Constitution :View Statutes : Online Sunshine

(14) "Electric weapon or device" means any device which, through the application or use of electrical current, is designed, redesigned, used, or intended to be used for offensive or defensive purposes, the destruction of life, or the infliction of injury.

You would be VERY wise to consult with a criminal defense attorney prior to going down this path.
 
Here's a preview on the kind of thing you're looking for...if one carries your proposed weapon in a concealed manner without the proper license, the one is committing a crime. Since I doubt that Florida allows for minors to be licensed for concealed carry of weapons, you may have a problem.

I'm really not concerned with you building the device. What concerns me would be your carry and possible use of the device.

Ohh ok, thanks for the clarification. I did more research too and found out you have to be 18+ to legally own a taser.
 
Even if you could legally own it you likely could not carry such a weapon without a permit. Even though the blade is under 4 inches it is not a common knife. It appears to me that MOST knives under 4 inches are legal but it is not absolute. I would bet your modification would make it an exception.

In Florida you will have to be 21 before you can get a permit to carry, but prior to then there are plenty of other egal options.
