Can someone please tell me what personal assets are exempt from consideration by Medicaid to get down to the threshold to qualify for Medicaid which I believe in South Dakota is $ 3000. Is our family home exempt?. What if the home is only in one persons name. If husband or wife have assets in their name alone are these assets exempt for consideration if the other person enters a long term care facility or since being married are they considered joint no matter whose names the assets are in?.
I'm not sure what you're asking, OP.
I'll try to help with what I understand.
If a person has a $50,000,000 home and is found to have a deadly disease.
They can't after the fact (legally) dispose of assets to get what they might call FREE medical care.
Some people try this to save their assets to pass along to their heirs.
I suggest you speak to the medicare provider in your state for definitive answers.
Remember, much of this is changing between now and 2015 with ObamaCare being rolled out, again.
The answer varies from state to state, but generally are similar.
The ages of the people matter.
I suggest you inquire of the state agency overseeing the program in SD, the provider, or the federal overseers: Medicare
