Father trying to steal my son

I have a friend who wants to leave a bad marriage, however, she fears that the father will try to take her son away from her. What measures can be taken to prevent this?

There is nothing she can do about her fear but file for divorce and try to work something out with her husband. She is free to ask for custody, so is she. She should talk to him to see if he is willing to be reasonable. Does she have any reason to think he could be awarded custody? She can ask for joint with her being residential parent...
