Going to work for a person who left my current company

I work for a company. A fellow employee works for the same company. They are leaving and starting their own company. I would like to apply to that company in the future. This new company is not in the same business as my current company and I would be in a different role.

Does my current company in the state of NC have any right to prevent me or go after the new company via legal means?

Did you sign a noncompete agreement?

Yes. It's a software company where I'm in support and I'd be going into the staffing industry where I'd be recruiting. No relation...would that still be an issue?

Don't know; the devil is in the details. Take the agreement to a local attorney specializing in employment law for review.
