Recently, my 1 year lease for a house ended, and I moved out at the end of the 12th month. I did not, however, give a 30 days notice, since I assumed it was implied since the lease was going to be up. The landlord is charging me for an extra months rent since I didn't give the notice. Is that legal? The landlord was planning on selling the house after my rent was up, and had several people come and look at the house while I was living there. I live in California by the way if that matters

Yes, it is legal. I am sure it is stated in your lease agreement that you must give notice, in writing, to your landlord. What the landlord was planning on doing with the property is irrelevant.

okay so if i notified them on the 20th, does that mean I only need to pay for the rent till the 20th of the next month?
also, can i say that the fact that they have people looking at the house, that is implying their knowledge that I am moving out? I know its a stretch... but do i have a case?

Typically the 30 days starts with the last day before the next months rent would be due. You can give notice on the 20th but it's unlikely your landlord will pro-rate your final months rent.
