My apllication to college (Public) is being held for further review because I did not fill out the parental information section. Admissions state they need this information to determine state residency status (for tuition). "It's their policy." The issue I have is that I have been married for five years now, had attended this University before (Residency status) but left for a year to work (in-state) and am now reapplying so that I can finish school. My wife graduated from the university and now works in the same city. I will submit to their demands if I HAVE TO.
I am wondering what gives them the right to require this information? My parents happen to live in Wisconsin, but what if they didn't? What difference should that make to MY residency status. I have obviously proven that I am an Independent student.
I read online that MIT has this requirement also, but for financial purposes. According to MIT, it doesn't matter if you are 40, have two kids, married, unless your parents are dead, they "are able" to help you pay for school and therefore their income is included in your EFC.
I guess the difference may be the the school in WI is a PUBLIC school while MIT is PRIVATE?
