Your vehicle can be subject to being towed after a certain amount, hefty fines will likely build up and, at least from what I read, in some states (not sure of this so don't quote me) there is a possibility of an arrest warrant being issued (which might be for failure to appear in court).

They will most likely hit you up for it next time you try to register the vehicle. If you don't pay the fine then you don't get to register.
