They certainly can if they are actively pursuing a suspect (as in chasing him or her), investigating a crime, looking for a wanted person and have reason to believe the person is in your home, serving legal documents, canvassing the neighborhood in the course of an investigation, etc...

If they appear and start to ask questions of you, you can simply say, "I have noting to say, please leave."
Your best bet is not to answer your door.
You aren't required to answer your door, unless a warrant is being served.
If that is the case, they'll normally "knock and announce", and like the Big Bad Wolf, then "huff and puff"; your door's coming down!

A no trespassing sign isn't going to keep the police away. As one of the other responders asked, why are you concerned?

If they have a lawful purpose then they can come on the property. There are a number of reasons that could be legitimate despite your signs.
A sturdy fence with a locked gate is a great way to keep them out in most cases, but they can still enter for a lawful purpose.
The magic line is drawn at the house. When entry into the house is made then it starts getting complicated.

CAN they? Sure. It all depends on why they are there and where they went. Whether they should, or whether any actions they take might be suppressed or actionable in a civil court would depend upon the nature of the actions.
