I think you should be allowed to purchase a firearm. If you can get a concealed weapon's permit is more in doubt.

It will depend on state law as well as federal. If the battery was punishable by more than a year in custody, then he is prohibited under federal law. If he was convicted of a misdemeanor battery in some other states, he could be prohibited from possessing a firearm for a specified period of time. And, if the battery was for domestic violence, he is likely prohibited under both state and federal law.

The offense was in Va. in 99. No jail time just probation because I was in the military. I now live in hawaii.

Go to a gun shop and ask them. They should be experts.

It makes sense. They want to sell you a gun, yet they won't want to risk running afoul of the law.
