Rent Receipts

I want to get everyone's opinion regarding rent receipts. Is it necessary to have the tenant sign the rent receipt as well as myself (landlord)? I have just been signing them myself and noting their check number (or cash when cash is paid) on the receipt.

I can't seem to find any literature on the subject.

From my understanding all we are talking about is money here -- as long as the rent is paid there should be no problems. Does the lease provide for the tenant being required to sign these receipts? What seems to be the problem?

No problems, just want to do things right! (The lease does not state anything regarding the signing of receipts.)
