Roommate disagreement

I signed a lease to live in an apartment with 4 other people, 5 including myself for a year. 3 of my roommates re-signed in January along with one new person to renew for another year starting in August when the current lease expires. I never signed as I wasn't sure of my situation in the coming year and I was gone the weekend in which they re-signed, but apparently it was assumed that I would at some point. I'm going to be moving to a different city and will not be re-signing, but obviously will be paying my share for the rest of this lease. 2 of the 3 that are renewing were aware that I hadn't re-signed and the 3rd person apparently just found out today. I have received word through one of them that he intends to take me to court if I do not re-sign or find someone to take my place for the next year. What are the chances that something like this will bear any weight in court?

Sounds like your lease doesn't expire until August. Why the need to renew way back in January?

Read your lease; they will often contain information as to the amount of notice you must give if you are not going to renew. This would allow your roommates time to find another roommate. Make certain your notice not to renew is in writing and dated before the deadline.

It's a college town so they force you to renew really early; it's asinine for them to expect people to have their plans figured out 8 months in advance though.
